RSNA in Brief—Q4 2024

On Jan. 22, 2025, at 9 a.m., CT, RSNA EdCentral will present a Live Case Review featuring Laura L. Avery, M.D. Dr. Avery will discuss three interesting and problematic emergency imaging cases. Nominations are open for the 2025 RSNA Rising Star Award. The education-focused honor was established to recognize the outstanding contributions and innovative work of early-career radiologists who are shaping the future of radiology education.

Consideration will be given to nominees who demonstrate sustained commitment and achievement in at least two of the following four areas:

• Education leadership
• Community outreach
• Radiology education and volunteer activities
• Innovation in radiology education.

Eligible nominees must be RSNA members. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 31, 2025.

RSNA's Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for qualified candidates to serve in two open Board of Director positions with terms beginning in December 2025. To help ensure inclusion of diverse perspectives and needed expertise, the Board seeks leaders with experience in relationship building, working in collaborative partnerships or in settings such as private practice, safety-net or community-based care.

Nominations will open Feb. 4 and close March 20 at 5 p.m. CT. The Nominating Committee will review the nominations and recommend a slate of candidates to the Board. Eligible members will vote on the final slate of candidates during the annual business meeting later this year.

Attendees with RSNA 2024 Virtual Access can view more than 480 education and science sessions until April 30, 2025, noon CT. Virtual Access also features over 90 industry presentations and more than 700 exhibitors.

Applications are being accepted for the RSNA William R. Eyler Editorial Fellowship and the RSNA William W. Olmsted Editorial Fellowship for Trainees. Both fellowships offer the opportunity to work with Radiology Editor Linda Moy, M.D., in New York City, and RadioGraphics Editor Christine 'Cooky' Menias, M.D., in Phoenix.

Applications are also being accepted for the RSNA Journals International Editorial Fellowship for early or midcareer radiologists currently residing in a non-North American country. The fellowship takes place over the course of two weeks through a series of virtual meetings. All applications are due March 3. The RSNA Research & Education (R&E) Foundation's grant applications are open. Several research and education grant opportunities are available with application deadlines in January and February 2025.

Research Grants

• The Research Scholar Grant is to help junior faculty members establish themselves as independent investigators.
• The Resident/Fellow Research Grant supports trainees while they learn about the principles of scientific investigation and research techniques and methods.
• The Research Seed Grant funds investigators seeking experience to help prepare for bigger grant applications to corporations, foundations and government agencies.
• The Medical Student Research Grant is intended to expose medical students to radiology research opportunities and academic radiology career paths.

Education Grants

• The Derek Harwood-Nash International Education Scholar Grant is for projects related to any area of radiologic education with an international scope.
• The RSNA/AUR/APDR/SCARD Education Research Development Grant provides research opportunities to advance the science of radiology education.
• The Education Project Award recognizes and highlights the impact of radiology educators.

In 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) issued a final rule implementing Section 1557 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). ACA Section 1557 prohibits discrimination in covered health programs and activities, including decision support tools and systems used by radiologists. RSNA has developed a resource to help answer radiologists' frequently asked questions (FAQs) about Section 1557 of the ACA.

RSNA's resource focuses on the use of clinical algorithms and AI in radiology. Topics covered in the FAQs include how the rule affects the use of clinical algorithms and AI in radiology practice, examples of decision support tools that might raise discrimination concerns, and the responsibility of radiologists who use third-party AI tools and algorithms to ensure such tools are not discriminatory. Also covered are practical descriptions of applicable terminology in ACA Section 1557, suggested resources to help radiologists navigate the requirements and consequences of non-compliance. The Medical Imaging and Data Resource Center (MIDRC) recently launched the MIDRC BDF Imaging Hub (BIH): a federated data search, discovery, and analysis platform that allows researchers to query and analyze data from independent data repositories or resources related to medical imaging. MIDRC, which is funded by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and hosted at the University of Chicago, is co-led by RSNA, the American College of Radiology and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

The next virtual seminar in the monthly MIDRC Seminar Series, "Enabling Contrastive Learning for the Development of Medical Imaging Foundation Models," will be held on Jan. 21, 2025, from 2-3 p.m. CT. The speakers are Curt Langlotz, M.D. Ph.D., Tessa Cook, M.D., Ph.D., and Akshay Chaudari, Ph.D. Held on the third Tuesday of the month, the Seminar Series is an opportunity for members of the medical community at-large to hear directly from the MIDRC Team. The seminar is free and open to everyone. Registration is required to attend.

Registration is open for the Writing a Competitive Grant workshop to be held March 21-22, 2025, at RSNA headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois. The workshop is designed for researchers in radiology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine and related sciences interested in actively pursuing federal funding. The 1 ½-day program is guided by a faculty of leading researchers with extensive experience in all aspects of grant applications and funding.

"Expert Insights on Emergency and Abdominopelvic Imaging," an RSNA Spotlight Course, will be held June 28-29, 2025, in Istanbul, Türkiye. The two-day course aims to help participants improve diagnostic speed and accuracy. Attendees will learn about current concepts and common pitfalls in image interpretation of abdominopelvic pathology and common applications of MRI in the emergency department.
