CHICAGO - Robert R. Hattery, M.D., was installed today as president-elect of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) for 2005. The announcement was made at the RSNA Annual Meeting in Chicago.

Dr. Hattery, who was elected to the RSNA Board of Directors in 1998, is the executive director of the American Board of Radiology (ABR), a position he assumed in July 2002.

"Times are a-changin' and with the changes come many opportunities for radiology and RSNA," Dr. Hattery said. Those opportunities include:

• Molecular, optical and functional imaging
• New avenues and funding sources for research
• Creation of academic careers for young investigators
• Expanding technologies, such as nanotechnology and minimally invasive therapies
• Integrated and coordinated healthcare through the electronic environment and the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE)
• New paradigms related to adult learning and maintenance of certification.

"Challenges abound in the future, of course, but RSNA is committed to its mission of education and research and will meet the challenges and seize the opportunities," Dr. Hattery said.

Before accepting the position at ABR, Dr. Hattery taught, administrated and served at the Mayo Clinic, Mayo Medical School and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minn., for more than three decades. He advanced from an instructor in 1973 to professor of diagnostic radiology in 1982. From 1981 to 1986, he was chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology. Dr. Hattery held more than a dozen administrative positions at Mayo, including serving as a member of the Mayo Foundation Board of Trustees, chairman of the Board of Governors and chief executive officer.

Prior to becoming RSNA Board Chairman for 2004, Dr. Hattery was RSNA Board Liaison for Publications and Communications. The position oversees Radiology and Radiographics, RSNA News, and a number of committees, including the Public Information Committee and the Public Information Web site Committee, which developed the patient education website, RadiologyInfo.org (www.radiologyinfo.org), along with the American College of Radiology. Dr. Hattery was also an ex-officio member of RSNA's Public Information Advisors Network. He has served on the editorial board for RSNA's journal RadioGraphics and was a scientific reviewer for the journal Radiology.

Dr. Hattery received his bachelor's and medical degrees from Indiana University. He interned at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas and was subsequently a fellow in diagnostic radiology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minn. In 1970, he was the chief resident in diagnostic radiology at Mayo.
